アンドリュース博士は若手の科学史・医学史家であり、特に近代解剖学や結核・細菌説の中国への同化に関する研究などで知られております。 またケンブリッジ大学のカニンガム博士（医学史）との共編によるマンチェスター大学刊行会からの著作は、非西欧世界からの視点で医学史を論じたものとして高い評価を受けております。 （著作リスト参照。） 同女史は、ケンブリッジ大学の科学史・科学哲学科の出身であり、塚原とはジョセフ・ニーダム博士の下の僚友でした。 現在はハーバード大学の科学史・科学哲学科でのアシスタント・プロフェッサーおよびヘッド・チューターを勤められており、国際東アジア科学・技術・医学史学会のセクレタリーでもあります。
今回のアンドリュース博士の来日は、「科学技術とジェンダー/フェミニズム」という神戸大学でとっている科研費（ジェンダー研究）が主体になっての招請です。 これは、ハーバードの科学史・科学哲学科で、「ジェンダーと科学技術」というコースを、同女史が担当されているため、そのシラバスやリーディング・リストなどを通じて、このコースの構成・ねらいなどを紹介していただく企画です。 今回のミニ・ワークショップでは、そのお話もふくめて、ハーバードでの科学史研究・中国学研究の現状にも触れつつ、情報交換をしてゆく予定にしております。
